Poor dining habits
The Tufts University researchers in charge of the study found that the most unhealthy eating habits involved insufficient consumption of whole grains and, conversely, excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates and processed meats.
Maintain balance in carbohydrate intake
According to the experts of the Italian Diabetes Society, those suffering from type 2 diabetes should not deprive themselves of carbohydrates altogether, as a diet too low in carbohydrates would not be suitable for them either. For this reason, it would be helpful to maintain a carbohydrate intake of 50 per cent of the calories one consumes daily. The myth of not having carbohydrates at dinner should also be dispelled as this could be counterproductive due to an excessive release of glucose from the liver during the night.
Dilute carbohydrate consumption
For those suffering from type 2 diabetes, the best solution would be to spread the consumption of carbohydrates throughout the day. Complex carbohydrates should be preferred over simple sugars as they have a low glycaemic index. So the choice should fall on wholemeal pasta and pulses. On the other hand, one should not exaggerate with fruit: eat yes but not in excess.
The Mediterranean diet is the best
For those suffering from type 2 diabetes, the most suitable diet would be the Mediterranean diet. So, space for complex carbohydrates from whole grains, vegetables and legumes.
