Fat liver, recommended foods and those to avoid

Fat liver, known as steatosis, is a condition caused by the accumulation of fat in liver cells. This situation occurs when the amount of accumulated fat exceeds the weight of the liver by 5%. 

The causes can be varied, ranging from diseases to incorrect dietary lifestyles.

Fat liver generally does not cause symptoms of any kind, but in some individuals it may lead to the development of inflammation and cirrhosis.

The possible causes
The causes can be varied, ranging from pathologies to incorrect lifestyles. Among the most common causes are type 2 diabetes, anaemia, hormonal imbalances, vitamin B12 deficiency, high levels of triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood, excessive alcohol consumption, diets too rich in fat, use of certain medications, physical activity and excessive exertion.

Symptoms
Fat liver generally does not cause symptoms of any kind, but in some individuals it may lead to the development of inflammation and cirrhosis. Fatty liver, in its initial stages, may still cause pain on the upper right side of the belly, usually temporary.

Recommended foods
Recommended foods when suffering from fat liver include fish (especially oily fish), raw and cooked vegetables, fruit, carbohydrates such as bread, pasta and rice, semi-skimmed milk and yoghurt, and meat, especially white meat.

Foods not recommended
Foods not recommended when suffering from fat liver include: alcohol, sugary drinks, sugars in general, fatty foods, foods of animal origin, mayonnaise and other processed sauces.
