Side effects of nutmeg abuse: would they really be that dangerous?

Nutmeg, usually used for the preparation of various foods, if consumed in excess can have particularly unpleasant side effects.

The spice, which comes from the Myristica Fraganstree, if taken in excessive doses can have psychoactive effects. The fault would be attributed to myristicin, which would act on neurotransmitters and cause hallucinations mixed with an anxious state.

The toxic effects of nutmeg can last up to two days, just like some drugs.

The side effects of nutmeg abuse
Nutmeg, usually used for the preparation of various foods, if consumed in excess can have particularly unpleasant side effects. The spice, which comes from the Myristica Fraganstree, if taken in excessive doses can have psychoactive effects.
What can happen in the hours following the abuse of nutmeg
The fault would be attributed to myristicin, which would act on neurotransmitters and cause hallucinations mixed with an anxious state. According to Dr. Bernstein of the Florida Poison Information Center del Jackson Memorial Hospital, in a time frame of 30 to 60 minutes after taking large doses of nutmeg, people usually have severe gastrointestinal reactions, including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In the following hours, some people may also suffer from heart and nerve problems.
What to pay special attention to
Those with heart disorders should pay special attention to the abuse of nutmeg as this could cause irregular rhythms. Maximum attention also to the fact that visual, auditory and sensory hallucinations do not manifest themselves immediately and this could cause an overdose, not knowing immediately that you have taken a spice that can cause these problems.
From the first poisonings of 1900 to the present day
Outbreaks of nutmeg poisoning were observed in the early 1900s, and a small recovery was observed in the mid-60s. More recently, the internet has caused an increase in interest in this spice used in an "alternative" way especially by young people looking for highs.
Normal use in the kitchen does not create problems
It should be emphasized that the use of nutmeg in the kitchen is absolutely safe because the amount used is so minimal that it does not cause any health problems. The problem is precisely abuse, i.e. the use of large quantities.
