Japan, at the bluefin tuna auction there is already a record purchase
As reported by The Japan Time, at the New Year's Eve auction at Tokyo's Toyosu Fish Market, a bluefin tuna was auctioned for the sum of about 273,000 US dollars (36.4 million yen).
This is a sum that doubles the maximum of the previous year. Certainly excellent news for the Japanese restaurant and economy, which are trying to recover after the two years of pandemic caused by Covid-19.
Tuna purchased for the sum of more than $270,000 weighs 212 kilograms. The previous year, the highest auction price was just under 17 million yen while bluefin tuna purchased on New Year's Eve 2023 boasts the sixth highest amount since data were made available for comparison in 1999.

The record sale of 2019
At the New Year's Eve auction held in 2019, a bluefin tuna weighing 278 kilograms reached a record 333.6 million yen (over $2 million). On that occasion, among other things, the auction was held for the first time in Toyosu after the relocation of Tokyo's main fish market from nearby Tsukiji.
