In this photo gallery we explore and describe some of the world's most popular local foods (and their cities), selected by Taste Atlas, a website dedicated to discovering gastronomic delights around the planet where products are voted by users.

From carne alla fiorentina to tiradito, from pasta alla carbonara to dim sum, we will travel to different parts of the globe, discovering the secrets and peculiarities of these cities and their ties with local gastronomy and culinary tradition.

The ranking is the result of combining the average rating of the best local and regional dishes served in a given city, the average rating of the national dishes served in that city and the average Google rating of the best traditional restaurants in that city. 5) Hong Kong, China
In fifth place is Hong Kong, with a score of 4.63. The dynamic eastern metropolis is renowned for its extraordinary skyline, lively markets and rich cultural heritage, but also for its local food scene: a mix of traditional Cantonese cuisine, international influences and a thriving street food culture.

5) Hong Kong, China
Dim sum, a wide range of small Cantonese dishes traditionally enjoyed in brunch restaurants, is probably the best-known Hong Kong local food in the world. Another special dish is the snake soup, a hot dish made from snake meat and flavoured with mushrooms and other ingredients. Other local foods to try are char siu, roast goose, egg tart and wonton noodles.

4) Naples, Italy
In fourth place is Naples, with a score of 4.65. Naples is the city that gave birth to pizza, one of the world's best known and most popular foods. The bustling Italian city is also known for its historical sites and breathtaking views of Mount Vesuvius, as well as its local food scene. The pizza margherita, topped with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil, symbolises the colours of the Italian flag.

4) Naples, Italy
Besides the classic pizza margherita, Naples is famous for the sfogliatella, a unique Neapolitan dessert filled with sweetened ricotta and citrus peel. Other local foods to try are spaghetti alle vongole and alla puttanesca, and the typical babà.

3) Lima, Peru
In third place is Lima, with a score of 4.66. Peru's capital is known for its beautiful coastal scenery, a vibrant art scene and a rich history dating back to pre-Columbian times, but also for its gastronomic delicacies, which blend traditional Peruvian ingredients with international culinary techniques.

Particularly popular is tiradito, a Peruvian-Japanese hybrid of thinly sliced raw fish with spicy sauce (pictured). Other local foods to try are anticuchos, skewers of marinated beef heart, and ceviche, a dish of raw fish marinated in citrus juices and spiced with chilli peppers. But also butifarra, salchipapa, anticuchos and aji de gallina.

2) Rome, Italy
In second place is Rome, with a score of 4.68. The Eternal City has a rich history, but its local food scene also has much to tell, with hearty and tasty dishes made with simple and fresh ingredients. One of the most typical Roman street foods are the supplì, fried rice balls filled with mozzarella and tomato sauce.

The city's most representative dish is probably pasta alla carbonara, made with bucatini (a type of pasta), eggs, guanciale, pecorino cheese and black pepper. Other typical dishes to try are: cacio e pepe, penne all'arrabbiata, pizza al taglio and saltimbocca alla romana.

In first place is Florence, with a score of 4.71. The schiacciata, a local focaccia often seasoned with olive oil and salt, is one of the most popular local foods.
