5) Bhut Jolokia (Ghost Pepper)
The ghost pepper, also known as bhut jolokia, is an interspecific hybrid pepper cultivated in north-east India. It is a hybrid of Capsicum chinense and Capsicum frutescens. The ghost pepper is rated at more than one million Scoville Heat units, about 1,001,304 SHU.

4) Naga Viper pepper
The naga viper chilli was created in England and is said to be an unstable three-way hybrid produced from naga morich, bhut jolokia and Trinidad scorpion. It has a Scoville heat rating of 1,382,118.

3) Trinidad Scorpion Butch T pepper
The Trinidad scorpion butch T is a variety of capsicum chinense, which is among the hottest chillies in the world. It is native to Trinidad and Tobago. The Trinidad scorpion 'Butch T' chilli has been ranked as the hottest chilli in the world according to Guinness World Records for three years. This variety has a measured hotness index of about 1,463,700 Scoville heat units.

2) Trinidad moruga scorpion
The Trinidad scorpion is a variety of chilli pepper of the capsicum chinense species, native to Central America and the Caribbean. It was identified by the Chili Pepper Institute at the University of New Mexico. In March 2011, it was ranked as the hottest in the world, only to lose its place to the Carolina reaper. The Trinidad moruga scorpion is approximately the size of a goal ball and the hotness index stands at about 2,009,231 SHU.

1) Carolina reaper
The Carolina reaper is a variety of chilli belonging to the Capsicum chinense species. The first specimen was obtained from a cross between a Naga Morich and a Red Habanero. In 2013, this chilli entered the Guinness Book of Records as the hottest in the world, reaching an average hotness of 1,569,300 SHU, with peaks of 2,200,000. Red in colour, this chilli has an end that resembles the tail of a scorpion.
